Money Magdalena

Money Magdalena was created in 2019 for the MA Window exhibition series by Munich Artists at Munich’s Odeonsplatz. The exhibition space was located directly beside an ATM, a setting that became the starting point for the work’s exploration of money.

The installation combines religious imagery with symbols of the financial world, raising questions about value, belief, and the mechanisms of a society in which money often occupies a central role. At the heart of the work is a figure reminiscent of Mary Magdalene, holding a bundle of cash in front of her chest and surrounded by a gilded halo. The installation is not intended as a critique of religion, but rather as a reflection on the values that shape contemporary society and the things in which people place their faith.

After the exhibition opened, representatives of the Church expressed concern that the work could be interpreted as disrespectful toward Christian symbols. The resulting dialogue gave innerfields the opportunity to explain its artistic language and clarify that Money Magdalena does not question religious belief. Instead, it invites viewers to reconsider the roles of money, faith, and social value systems.
