Panem

This mural is one of the works that brought us a certain kind of dubious fame. At the time, we had both recently become fathers and were unable to make a living from our own art. As a result, we increasingly took on commercial painting commissions. The two walls at Warschauer Brücke featuring an advertisement for Panem were one of them.

At the time, we did not know that Blu’s mural had been painted over specifically to make way for our commission. We assumed it was already gone. Today, we would no longer simply accept and carry out a project like this without questioning the context behind it. We should have realized that we were not simply painting two empty walls, but covering an important part of Berlin’s mural and street art history. For that, we would like to apologize.

This mural remains an ambivalent chapter for us. It was one of our first major commercial commissions, but more importantly, it taught us that not every wall is simply an empty surface, and that as artists we carry responsibility for what we leave behind.

A significantly insignificant mural.
